2024 Highlights

The Opening Night event took place in the Cathedral forecourt, with Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP and NSW Premier the Hon. Chris Minns once again officially launching Christmas at the Cathedral 2024.  

The event drew large crowds to St Mary’s Cathedral forecourt, with thousands attending across 14 days.  

The theme brought the classic story of “A Christmas Carol” to life, illuminating the Cathedral façade and entertaining the crowd. A new addition to the festival was the west side of the Cathedral, which was lit up with an image of the Holy Family, visible from Hyde Park. Food and market stalls once again proved popular, offering festive gifts and a variety of food for all ages. 

2023 Highlights

Christmas at the Cathedral attracted massive crowds to St Mary’s Cathedral forecourt, with thousands of people attending the event over 14 days

The event’s theme centred on the 12 Days of Christmas. The 13-minute illuminations on the Cathedral façade was the highlight of the event. The first part of the illumination featured an animation sequence based on the 12 Days of Christmas song we all know and love. The second sequence featured the twelve days of faith, depicted in a spinning lantern sequence by Renaissance paintings.

The Food & Market stalls were an astounding success, offering a combination of Christmas gift shopping and food options for all budgets.

2022 Highlights

The Opening Night event was held in the Cathedral forecourt with Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP and the Hon. Damien Tudehope MLC, representing the Premier of NSW officially launching Christmas at the Cathedral 2022.

Christmas at the Cathedral attracted massive crowds to St Mary’s Cathedral forecourt with over 180,000 people attending the Event over the 18-day period.

The event’s theme centered on hope and peace amidst struggle. The light show began by capturing God’s Holy Spirit hovering over the waters of creation, transforming them into a life-giving spring, sustaining every kind of living thing. It reminded us of the strength of our community coming together after the devastating floods in NSW and the importance of community in our lives.

The market stalls were an astounding success, offering a combination of both Christmas gift shopping as well as various food options.
